York is a famous walled city steeped in traditional British history, the main historic attraction being the York Minster which has the second highest office of the Church of England. As you walk through the streets of York you can feel the history of it all around you in the buildings that line them, some cobbled streets and the walls that surround the city.
In the 19th Century, York was the centre of the railway network and now houses the National Rail museum, it boasts a wonderful collection of mechanical objects, and depicts the usefulness of Trains in Britain and York at the time of construction and their ongoing importance.
If you are only in York for a short period, a quick overview of the city, and its stories and history can be seen in the Yorkshire Museum and Museum Gardens. It houses many Viking, Roman and Medieval artefacts. The gardens run from outside the Museum to the river Ouse walled with beautiful flower borders.
There are many ways to visit the many attractions that York holds, by boat along the river, on an open topped bus, guided walks, you may also be daring enough to go on the ‘Original Ghost Walk of York’ which has been claimed as the world’s first ghost walk.
